Raising the Bar

This summer, Earn & Learn participants Aleyah and Kaitlyn spent time as Youth Workers at Raising the Bar, a local non-profit that empowers youth to cultivate their physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

"They were instrumental in helping us create a positive summer experience for the children and families served by Raising the Bar and Gracious Gifts," said Executive Director La'Ketta Caldwell.

Throughout the summer, Raising the Bar staff saw Aleyah and Kaitlyn demonstrate responsibility, patience, teamwork, and a willingness to learn.

"They did not simply come to work each day; they became part of our team and had opportunities to strengthen their communication, customer service, leadership, and workplace skills," said Caldwell.

One of the highlights of the summer was Raising the Bar’s Books, Bikes & Barbers event. Aleyah and Kaitlyn helped at the registration desk, supported the gaming truck, read to children, assisted families, and helped distribute bikes. They also had the exciting opportunity to meet Dwyane Wade during the event.

Kaitlyn and Aleyah were trusted with responsibilities, interacted with children and families, and helped make a major event successful, applying their job skills in a real community setting. Caldwell noted that Earn & Learn gave them an opportunity to earn income, build confidence, develop valuable job skills, and see that their work can make a difference.

"We truly loved working with Aleyah and Kaitlyn and wish we could have them with us throughout the entire year," said Caldwell. "Their success is a reminder of what can happen when we invest in young people, give them meaningful opportunities, and trust them to lead."
