New Year, New Skills

In 2024, Andrea Dennis set a goal to gain hands-on experience in a commercial kitchen to prepare for opening her own restaurant someday. She saw a Facebook post about Serve MKE, Employ Milwaukee's culinary and hospitality skills training program funded through the US Department of Labor and contacted Program Specialist Tashika Coleman.

"She was incredibly attentive and worked quickly to get me enrolled in the program," Andrea said.

She began her training in January 2025, attending two weeks of classes at Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) where she worked alongside a professional chef, earned college credit in culinary studies, and obtained her ServSafe Manager Certification.

"[Serve MKE] gave me valuable industry knowledge, increased my confidence, and opened doors to new opportunities," said Andrea.

After completing her training, she secured a five-month internship with Hilton Milwaukee where she worked in several areas; the hotel's bar and pub, catering department, and steakhouse restaurant. The variety of experience taught Andrea the importance of customer service and teamwork, and inspired her to pursue higher education. She is currently enrolled in Bryant & Stratton College's Hospitality and Restaurant Management Associate Degree program, which she will complete in spring 2027.

In spring 2026, Andrea also earned a ServSafe Alcohol Certification through Serve MKE to expand her opportunities for career advancement as she works towards her long-term goal of owning her own restaurant.

"Employ Milwaukee provided me with more than just certifications," Andrea said. "They provided me with the foundation, resources, and vision needed to pursue my dreams. I am grateful for the role Employ Milwaukee has played in helping me build that future."
