More than a Summer Job
When Alexis Hortman enrolled in Earn & Learn at 14 years old, she was dealing with challenges due to her parents’ custody battle.
“Earn & Learn came into my life at a time when I needed direction, encouragement, and opportunity,” she said.
Alexis appreciated that the program offered creative and community-centered work, which she said sparked passions that she didn’t know she had. Alexis also attended Earn & Learn’s job readiness training sessions before jumping into her summer employment. These classes taught her how to complete job applications, prepare for interviews, and present herself professionally, skills she continues to use today.
Alexis entered Earn & Learn as a quiet introvert, but working with youth in the community in roles of leadership and guidance boosted her confidence.
“I looked up to my aunt, a woman of poise, grace, and assertiveness, who could command every room she entered with a quiet strength,” Alexis said. “She inspired me to step outside of myself and dream bigger.”
Her work experiences with Earn & Learn influenced her decision to pursue a degree in psychology, eventually becoming a full-time advocate. Alexis now works at the Sojourner Family Peace Center and was promoted to a supervisor role in under a year. She was also recognized by Human Resources staff for her strong interview presence, which she credits in part to Earn & Learn. Alexis considers Earn & Learn more than just a summer job opportunity.
“It’s a community pillar that equips youth with real-world skills, nurtures potential, and offers life-changing experiences. I am forever grateful for the role Earn & Learn has played in my journey, and I proudly continue to refer families I work with to this invaluable resource.”
