Growing in the Community

Alijah was released from juvenile detention at age 18 in April 2025 after entering the juvenile justice system at 13 years old. He enrolled in Transition High School in the fall and was referred by a staff member to the Growth Opportunities (GO MKE) program, funded by the US Department of Labor. GO MKE provides life skill development and career exploration services to youth and young adults aged 15-18 who are at a high risk of involvement in violence due to systemic barriers, including justice-involved youth. The program works to build long-term career success for participants while developing strategies that promote safety and well-being within the community.

During the intake process, Alijah shared that he was ready for a change and to respond to situations differently than he did before. He was successfully discharged from probation with no conduct reports or violations. He enrolled in GO MKE in February, and with the support of the program and received his driver’s license in March. Alijah completed the Work Skills Planning Academy, a 6-week work readiness course that prepares youth for employment and the outside world by teaching resume building, financial literacy, conflict resolution, and civic engagement to help prevent recidivism and encourage employment and education.

He started work experience in April as a Youth Worker for WestCare, gaining insight into work at a nonprofit. Alijah graduated from Transition High School in May and found employment with Summerfest as a Security Officer in June.

Alijah appreciates the GO MKE program being accessible, providing rides and food to support him in focusing on succeeding in his work experiences and learning, and allowing him to share his story to help and influence others. He said that this is the longest that he has been out in the community that he can remember and attributed this to the program and the connection with its staff. He plans to apply for an Electrician Apprenticeship in the fall to start on a skilled trades career pathway through a proven workforce development model.

GO MKE is supported by the U.S. Department of Labor. A total of $2,000,000, or 88%, of the program is financed with federal funds.
